Why should the history of a small club in a small town in the Midlands be worth writing? Shakespeare, of course, is the key and the town of Stratford-upon-Avon the context.

The book is based on documentary evidence provided by the rich archives of the Club dating back to its foundation in 1824 and the archives of Stratford-upon-Avon which are preserved in the collections of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

The authors aimed to present a chronological account of the Club’s history which have been illustrated with photographs, documents and other visual materials, and also with ‘feature boxes’, separate short accounts of important people, objects, events and facts interspersed through the text.
‘I am immensely proud to have been President (2004/5) of the oldest Shakespeare Club in existence. The book tells us the fascinating story of the Club, and of how Stratford came to be the world centre of Shakespeare performance and celebration.’
Gregory Doran, Artistic Director
Royal Shakespeare Company

‘Now the club’s activities over the years are chronicled and celebrated in this authoritative and long overdue volume.’
Professor Sir Stanley Wells

‘Its rich history deserves to be told, and there are no better-equipped tellers of this history than Sylvia Morris and Susan Brock.’
Professor Carol Chillington Rutter
